Rules
Acceptable use for Minecraft servers and hosted websites.
These rules keep the service fair for everyone sharing the nodes. By using a server or a hosted website you agree to them.
Port usage
Stick to your one port. Do not tunnel additional services through it, and do not request more — the limit is fixed per instance so that every user gets a fair slice of the node.
Attacks
No attacking anything. Do not DDoS other players, other servers, or JohnHost infrastructure. The DDoS mitigation exists to protect you, not to be tested.
Website hosting
Websites get 5 GB of SSD storage, 50% CPU, and 1.5 GB of RAM. Those caps are the whole product — keep inside them and you're fine. Going over means something gets slowed down or turned off, and it'll be your problem, not everyone else's.
- No crypto mining, no browser-based mining scripts, nothing like that.
- No mail servers, and no sending mail as johnhost. If you need to send email, use a proper provider.
- No proxying, VPN, or public proxy services out of a site.
- No huge media libraries, no video or streaming. A site that serves gigabytes of video will eat the storage and the bandwidth.
- No file dumps, no mirrors, no "free" storage for other people.
- No adult content, no piracy, no malware, no phishing — same as everything else here.
- One site per person. If you need more, ask first instead of quietly spinning up a second one.
Sites that sit unused for a long stretch may get reclaimed, same as idle Minecraft servers. You'll be contacted before that happens.
Illegal content and activity
No illegal content or activity. This includes hosting pirated software, malware, phishing pages, or anything that is not a Minecraft server or a legitimate website.
Backup usage
Do not hammer the backups. Daily backups share node storage. Keep world and plugin folders to a reasonable size; if usage rises well beyond what a normal server needs, you will be contacted before anything is removed.
Reselling
Free means free for the applicant. Do not resell instances, sub-lease access, or advertise "hosting" that is actually a JohnHost server.
Free means best-effort
There is no uptime guarantee or service-level agreement. Hardware fails, and a free service does not come with a support contract — but instances are kept as reliable as possible.
Resource use
Be reasonable with resources. Do not run mining scripts, saturate CPU continuously for unrelated workloads, or otherwise abuse shared node resources.
Enforcement
Violations are generally handled with a warning first, except for illegal activity or behaviour that actively harms others, which results in immediate suspension.
